Young Speakers Invitational allows students to shine

May 8, 2012

The EIPS/ATB Young Speakers Invitational was a resounding success on two fronts: allowing students to shine as they delivered exceptional informative, persuasive and entertaining speeches, and raising money for a local nonprofit organization.

Held at the Strathcona County Community Centre on March 14, the fourth annual event saw 57 students from 20 schools in Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) compete in the preliminary round to determine the top four students who would advance to the final competition round for each grade category.

A silent auction held in conjunction with the speech competition raised $4,380 for the Robin Hood Association in Sherwood Park, a nonprofit organization that provides person-centred services and supports to children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Event organizers Jordan Smith, a teacher at Brentwood Elementary, and Blair Ching, a teacher at Fort Saskatchewan Elementary, would like to thank the many people and groups that made the speech competition a success by judging or donating silent auction items. Thanks also to ATB Financial and Strathcona County Council for their generous sponsorship.
